Bayer Crop Science Tomato Assistant Pre-Breeder (Research and Development Specialist III)

Location: Acampo, California, USA

Your tasks and responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of this role, Bayer Crop Science Tomato Assistant Pre-Breeder (Research and Development Specialist III), are to: 

  • Provide strategic and tactical support to the US based Tomato Pre-Breeding team. This is a full time position and reports to the Tomato Pre-Breeder. The activities of this position will include participating in discovery trait research by managing processes and operations within the pre-breeding program and by coordinating and communicating program activities to technical assistants and seasonal employees;
  • Manage day-to-day operations within the pre-breeding program including the coordination and communication of activities to the technical assistants and seasonal labor;
  • Together with the other assistant Pre-Breeder, assist and support the  Pre-Breeder in all aspects of planting, growing, pollinating, sampling, and harvesting of material and where directly managing projects, provide analysis, interpretation, and written summaries/reports;
  • Create and manage records in Bayer's databases and ensure data integrity;
  • Support the Pre-Breeder in the management of multiple projects (global in scope) simultaneously with both internal and external collaborators to ensure a constant flow of value added traits into commercial varieties;
  • Assist and support the Pre-Breeder in the optimization of efficiency and output in the pre-breeding program by designing and implementing new technologies and methods;
  • Gain and maintain a broad vision on the global markets that we breed for in order to participate together with the Pre-Breeder and other R&D personnel in the setting of goals and strategies for our team.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master of Science with one plus years’ of experience or;
  • Bachelor of Science with four plus years’ of experience;
  • Knowledge of plant breeding, biotechnology, statistics, agronomy, plant pathology;
  • Team player;
  • Organized and able to multi-task;
  • Computer skills: management information systems, databases, statistical programs, spreadsheets;
  • Travel both domestically and internationally (10 - 15%);
  • Variable working hours with peak periods during growing season;
  • Working in outdoor conditions (heat, cold, rain);
  • May be required to lift up to 40 lbs.
