DNA Marker Specialist

Location: Hollister, California, USA

Our Company

Founded in 1990 and headquartered in Hollister, California, United Genetics Seeds Co. has been developing and producing quality vegetable seeds for the global commercial market for over 25 years. A subsidiary of the Japanese Kagome Group, UG Scientist use traditional methods to the following species: tomato, pepper, cantaloupe/melon, watermelon, cucumber, eggplant, and squash. Not involved in any transgenic activity.

Purpose of the position is to assist DNA analyses for Breeders and Quality Control as well as to assist other aspect of plant breeding activities.

This position will conduct marker assisted selection (MAS) throughout breeding process from F2 population to parental line upon Breeders’ request. This position will also conduct fingerprinting and hybridity analyses based on provided direction from Quality Control department. The position will require skill for handling basic labwares (pipettes, microtubes, centrifuge…etc). The position will be in charge of daily operation of DNA laboratory and seasonal operation of processing laboratory, organizing provided requests from Breeders and Quality Control department.

The position will be reporting to Plant Breeders and Head of Breeding Technology of United Genetics Seeds Co.

POSITION DIMENSIONS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Internal Contacts: Direct contact with Breeders (Tomato, pepper, melon, watermelon, onion) and Quality Control

External Contacts: Labware suppliers to buy consumables, external lab to outsource Fingerprinting analysis

Education Level and Focus: Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field. Experience with laboratory experiments is desired.

Years and Type of Related Experience Required: Skills and Abilities:

Interpersonal and Communication: Need the ability to understand and communicate fluently in English.

Technical and Analytical:
The following skills will be required:

  • All computer programs: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook etc.
  • Handling of scientific instrument: centrifuge, thermal cycler, electrophoresis
  • Handling of nucleic acid, restriction enzyme, DNA polymerase
  • Very accurate liquid handing with pipettes (0.5ul-1ml)

Administrative and Operations:

Physical Demands: The candidate must be skilled to work in the laboratory. Must also be physically fit to walk, bend, kneel, squat.

Work Environment: Laboratory, outdoor, greenhouse work with temperatures close to 100 degrees, walk on uneven surface and often be exposed to chemicals.
