Farm Manager

Description

This role is part of our WinField United business that provides crop inputs and insights to farmers through our network of independent ag retailers. Through our leadership expertise, high quality products, rich data and innovative ag technology, we strive to help the retailers and farmers they serve intelligently advance agriculture and help farmers win in every field around the world. Qualifications About the opportunity Land O' Lakes operates research stations throughout North America. The Farm Operations Manager will be responsible coordinating use of all farm equipment, undertaking farm operations (ground-work, spraying, etc.), maintaining farm equipment, ensuring quality of farm work done by custom farmers, contributing to strategic long-term farm management planning, lead farm safety initiatives. The position will report to the Davis Station Manager and as necessary coordinate and oversee the work of temporary labor with the guidance of the Station Manager. Davis station is a dual crop station conducting alfalfa and corn silage varietal development research. The Farm Operations Manager will be expected to provide leadership in operational safety as well as Excellence Through Stewardship (ETS) management of biological materials including regulated materials as it applies to farm work.

Job responsibilities

  • Develop and implement maintenance plan for all farm equipment
  • Develop and implement a plan for all farming operations including but not limited to land-preparation, weed control, pest control, irrigation, fertilizer application.
  • Operate equipment to perform all needed general farm work.
  • Coordinate equipment use by other station staff as necessary.
  • Coordinate and oversee quality of work done by custom farmers or vendors related to farming activities.
  • Contribute to long-range planning of farm activities including leases, rotations, labor needs, infrastructure projects.
  • With guidance from Station Manager oversee and lead seasonal workers in farming activities.
  • Observe all California and Land O' Lakes policies and regulations that apply to farm activities.
  • Provide for a safe and orderly work environment with regards to farm equipment, activities, and grounds.
  • Provide training on farm safety to seasonal workers and station staff.
  • Participate and provide leadership regarding the implementation of Excellence Through Stewardship (ETS) standards as they apply to farm operations.

Job qualification requirements

  • High school degree, GED, or equivalent technical certification
  • 5+ years of operational farm management experience or equivalent responsibility
  • In-depth understanding of agricultural cultural practices (e.g. ground preparation, weed control, fertility management)
  • In-depth understanding of equipment operation and maintenance
  • Computer proficiency for GPS tractor operation and other equipment requiring interaction with electronics requiring configuration or setup
  • Capable of lifting 50 lbs
  • Capable of operating farm equipment
  • Capable of working a non-traditional work schedule based on seasonal and situation demands including extended hours and work week
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a California driver's license
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a California pesticide applicator's license

Preferred qualifications

  • Ability to speak Spanish
  • Experience conducting farming activities for research purposes
  • Experience growing alfalfa and/or corn with strong preference for conducting research in alfalfa and/or corn
  • Experience with California agricultural practices and regulations
  • Ability to do fabrication and modification of equipment
  • Commercial Drivers' License
