Field Introgression Biologist, Seeds and Traits R&D

Location: Fowler, Indiana, USA

Under the general supervision of the Trait Introgression Leader and Station Manager, the Field Introgression Biologist will apply crop cultural techniques, crop breeding principles, and transgenic crop development skills to plan, implement, monitor and analyze trait introgression finishing nurseries, replicated yield trials, and support development of new transgenic traits in full compliance with all DAS, State and Federal regulations. Additionally this position will support the Site Operations Leader with administration and site specific projects to ensure location goals are met.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and lead field activities for event sorting and trait introgression line finishing, including but not limited to; yield trial coordination, nursery management, seed handling, planting, thinning, gene checking, tissue sampling, pollinating, note-taking, plant selection, harvesting, drying, data analysis, reporting, and seed shipping.
  • Participate in line finishing yield trial and nursery data analysis activities for Fowler and key backup nurseries, ensuring that all finishing nursery data is ready for advancement meetings.
  • Ensure that the program is in full compliance with all DAS, State and Federal requirements governing regulated transgenic field testing activities.
  • Provide on-going leadership, coaching and feedback to trait finishing nursery personnel and part-time employees.
  • Actively participate in global multi-disciplinary teams comprised of lab, field, parent seed, and management personnel to support trait finishing activities.
  • Contribute leadership skills, ideas and support for trait introgression and other station initiatives including those relating to HR, EH&S, and cross-functional teams.
  • Travel to other field introgression locations and research stations and laboratories as needed.
  • Ensure that DAS EH&S, DOT and station regulations and policies are enforced.

This position is located in Fowler, Indiana, USA.

Qualifications:

  • M.S. or PhD degree in Crop Genetics, agronomy or a related field.
  • Solid understanding of genetics and/or molecular biology, agronomy, statistics, transgenic crop development, emerging technologies and customers needs.
  • Previous experience with crop breeding program is desirable.
  • Demonstrated personal leadership, interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and work effectively on teams.
  • Must have enthusiasm and aptitude for learning and continuous improvement of critical research activities.
  • Extremely well developed computer skills.
