Responsible Care (RC) is a chemical industry initiative to improve performance in the fields of environmental protection, occupational safety and health protection, plant safety, product stewardship and logistics. RC also strives to continuously improve the dialog with neighbors and the public, independent from legal requirements.
The Responsible Care Field Coordinator (RCFC) in BPS will play a vital role in ensuring that field operations are conducted in accordance with RC principles, with a focus on occupational safety. The Responsible Care Field Coordinator is tasked with providing support for full-time, temporary, and contractor personnel in Seed Activities, Development, Thurston Genetics, field staff for sales & marketing and Nutrition, and BPS field employees at remote sites such as Puerto Rico and the southern US.
This position will be based in the Sycamore, Illinois or Ames, Iowa, reporting to headquarters in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina and will be responsible for:
- Conduct worker safety risk assessments for facilities, equipment, and processes, and review all operating procedures for field and field-related activities conducted within BPS
- Create and manage comprehensive RC training programs for personnel involved in field activities and equipment. This will be by direct action or through cooperative efforts with local Safety Officers and will cover the coordination, expansion, and documentation of new and ongoing safety training programs.
- Ensure the efficient flow of information and RC documentation between field stations thereby establishing uniformity.
- Monitor and report incidents, performing necessary Root Cause Analyses as well as defining and implementing corrective actions.
- Regularly visit all field stations and remotely located BPS field colleagues to provide training, assessments, process improvement guidance, and RC program technical expertise and policy interpretation and audits as necessary
- Coordinate BPS RC activities with BASF Corp RC to minimize redundancies and ensure consistency of RC policy communications to employees.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum: BS (MS preferred) in an agricultural science discipline (e.g Agronomy, Crop Science, Plant Breeding, Ag Engineering), plus 10 years demonstrable, hands-on field experience in a plant breeding or ag chem assignment, including work with heavy agricultural research equipment. BASF recognizes Institutions of Higher Education that are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent.
- At least 3 years of demonstrable safety experience dealing with fieldworker and agricultural equipment , as part of a formal safety team and/or leader of the safety program with accountability to the corporate safety function.
- Experience with process improvement
- Experience using a database to collect and manage information, preferably related to worker safety.
- Ability and willingness to travel extensively throughout the US (including Hawaii), and Puerto Rico, seasonally up to 50%.
- Demonstrated evidence of superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral.

- Experience in a multi-cultural environment
