Breeding Research Associate

Location: Campinas, Brazil

The primary responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Support the indeterminate tomato breeding program and other breeding programs as needed, follow the breeding projects delegated by the breeder according to established crop breeding strategy. Be responsible for the seed inventory, sowings, crop supervision, pollination, breeding line pre-selections, seed harvest, internal and external trial coordination. Represent the program when breeder is not present.
  • Become liaison for off station indeterminate tomato breeding activity in South America.
  • Manage specific germplasm development projects under the direction of the breeder.
  • Manage and be accountable for the proper trial design, establishment and supervision of the development and quality of breeding and hybrid trails as well as crossing blocks; collaborate effectively with operations for cultural management of trial.
  • Manage data capture and analysis in proprietary breeding database. 
  • Coordinate basic seed logistic for the program including seed health testing, molecular purity analysis, and disease resistance verification.
  • Coordinate molecular marker sampling, testing and result analysis.
  • Manage quality control and testing protocols and activities of the parental lines and hybrid production.
  • Liaise with other HM.Clause tomato breeding teams.
  • Coordinate and evaluate specific breeder and adaptation trials – both on and off site, as well as data analysis, interpretation and conclusion.
  • Manage postharvest activities according to the project needs.
  • Integrate new technology into breeding program in both the areas of phenotyping tools and data management systems.
  • Supervise technical (B.Sc. or Field technician), seasonal and/or contract workers, as well as manage day to day operations and logistic of the breeding programs at their area of influence in cooperation with the local team.
  • Manage seed inventories and seed shipments locally and internationally.

Qualifications:

  • Position requires a minimum B.A. or B.S. (M.Sc. preferred) with 4 years of experience in plant breeding or plant science related field.
  • Ability to speak and write English and Portuguese, Spanish a plus.
  • Able to travel internationally and domestically as required for business.

Skills required:

  • Good interpersonal, effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Advanced user of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; experience with database systems.
  • Detail oriented, accurate, exercise good judgment, adaptable and dependable.
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work.
  • Team player with the ability to manage multiple projects having strong analytical    skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to notice very small differences between plants
  • Ability to interact professionally and efficiently with internal partners: labs, operations, Product Managers, PDs, other breeding teams as well as external partners like growers or dealers.  
  • Ability to train seasonal workers.
  • Ability to adapt to seasonal peaks and to handle perishable matter.
  • Ability to disclose any mistake.
  • Ability to work in an environment where mistake would need to be communicated immediately to avoid confusion or damage to the breeding program.
