Position Overview:
The selected intern will get hands-on experience in Woodland, California conducting research in vegetable crops focusing on phenotyping and genotyping selected disease resistance traits of interest. Interns also have the opportunity to gain exposure on related functions such as high-throughput genotyping and commercial breeding.
Responsibilities/Learning Experience:
Interns are assigned to supervisors who outline general responsibilities, and assist in project assignment and completion, and arrange opportunities to interact with other departments. Interns are involved in various aspects of a trait assessment during their employment to gain a broad overview of the career opportunities available within breeding, trait genetics, and plant pathology in Monsanto.
Specific daily activities may include: sowing seed for disease resistance bioassays, preparation of inocula and inoculation of plants, assessment of plant phenotypes, data collection, recording and interpretation of results. Interns can expect to spend significant time with supervisors which will provide exposure to many aspects of the vegetable seed business.
Interns will be asked to perform a specific research assignment in addition to daily responsibilities. The results of this project will be presented to a wide audience. As part of the assignment, interns and supervisors will be asked for feedback on the program and research project.
Dates for this summer internship are May 15 - August 4 of 2017.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Enrolled in a university within the U.S. and pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in Genetics, Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Science or related field.
- Interested in exploring a research career in plant pathology and genetics.
- Must be returning to school upon completion of internship to continue program of study.
- Detail and results-oriented individual with the ability to work independently.
- Strong motivational, organizational, and problem solving skills.
- Excellent computer skills.
- Candidate must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better
- Candidate must be willing to relocate for period of internship.
