Position Overview:
The selected summer intern will get hands-on experience in Woodland, California conducting research on reproductive and developmental biology of corn. Interns will have the opportunity to study the physiological responses of corn to specific treatments in support of a broad collaboration across the company.
Responsibilities/Learning Experience:
Interns are assigned to supervisors who outline general responsibilities, assist in project assignment and completion, and arrange opportunities to learn about other functions within the company.
Interns are involved in various aspects of a trait assessment during their employment to gain a broad overview of the career opportunities available within Chemistry, Biotechnology and Breeding at Monsanto. Specific daily activities may include: assessment of plant phenotypes, tissue sampling, performing assays, and data collection and interpretation. Interns can expect to spend significant time with supervisors during which the rationale and philosophy behind a discovery program can be explored.
Interns will be asked to perform a specific research assignment in addition to daily responsibilities. The results of this project will be presented to a site-wide audience at the end of the internship. As part of the assignment, interns and supervisors will be asked for feedback on the program and research project.
Dates for this summer internship are May 15 - August 4 of 2017.
Minimum Qualifications:

Pursuing a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. degree in Plant Science, Chemistry, Biotechnology or related field at a university within the U.S.

If candidate is an undergraduate, must have attained Junior or Senior standing with a 3.0 (or above) GPA on a 4.0 scale

Strong interest in exploring a research career in plant biology

Completion of at least one lab class each in Biology and Chemistry

Detail and results-oriented with the ability to work independently

Strong motivational, organizational, and problem solving skills

Previous lab experience in a research environment preferred

Ability to work in a warm greenhouse environment

Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.
