Plant Breeder

Location: Almeria, Spain

Full-time permanent position in Almeria / Spain Context Sakata Spain is a subsidiary of Sakata Seed Corporation (Japan) and is responsible for the development and expansion of the activities in Spain and across the EMEA area. With our wide array of vegetable seeds, we want to create a confidence-based relationship with our customers, working to our age old motto of Quality, Reliability and Service. In order to support our continuous growth, we are currently recruiting 2 breeders, based at our research facility in Almeria, Spain. Under the senior breeder responsibility, you will be in charge of 1 or 2 crops breeding programs.

Missions

  • Assume breeding programs in Almeria particularly through well conducted evaluation of new lines and hybrids at Sakata’s Research stations and at selected growers’ farms.
  • Manage all components of successful commercial crops breeding program, which includes management of existing germplasm, acquisition of new germplasm, development of elite inbred lines and hybrids, and production of elite lines
  • Schedule trials and plan for the necessary plot space, supplies and seasonal labor
  • Collaborate to upstream missions, such as long-term internal breeding projects and collaborative projects, literature survey, contacts with public research, development of tools for more efficient breeding.
  • Interact with the other members of the breeding team, labs and operations teams within Sakata group as well with Product manager and local subsidiary team to promote varieties and organize successful market introductions.
  • Interact with growers and market related personnel to support Sakata’s breeding with key information for its success.

Profile

  • MSc in Genetics and Plant Breeding or equivalent
  • 2-5 years working experience with field experimentation.
  • Basic knowledge of statistics as applied to field experimentation.
  • Strong communication, organizational, coordination and analytical skills
  • Flexibility, pro-active and able to perform in a multicultural environment
  • Ability to work in distance and assume efficient reporting to Sakata headquarters
  • Must be Fluent in English and Spanish

Location

  • Almeria, Spain • National and international travels are required
