This Corn Breeder works as part of the Seed Activities team within the BASF Plant Science organization. This team performs critical activities necessary to advance BPS's plant breeding and biotechnology projects from idea to marketplace as fast and effective as possible. These research and development projects focus on enhancing crop performance, productivity, nutritional value, and overall plant health.
Responsibilities include:
- Manage a corn breeding program in Hendereson and a testing program throughout Nebraska and portions of northern Kansas
- Develop nutritionally-enhanced inbreds and hybrids of 105-115 relative maturities for the U.S. corn market
- Manage summer and winter genetic nurseries and the evaluation program used to select superior genotypes for commercialization
- Supervise research station employees including full-time, temporary and seasonal
- Manage both operating and capital budgets for the breeding station
- Select and lease land from farmers to grow nurseries and yield trials.
- Administer Responsible Care, safety and security for the Henderson breeding station
Qualifications
Required:
- A Ph.D. in a plant breeding field. Or a Masters degree in a plant breeding field with 5 years experience in a seed company, university or USDA and working in a plant breeding program.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and lead research station employees -fulltime, temporary and seasonal
- Experience evaluating and selecting land for nursery and yield trials
- Experience operating, transporting and maintaining farm equipment
- Experience utilizing farm electronics including hand held data devices and GPS
- Self-motivation and the ability to work independently
- Willing and able to travel to winter nursery sites
Preferred:
- Experience working in corn breeding program.
- Experience working with environmental, health and safety programs
