Senior Research Associate

The Senior Research Associate will serve as the second level scientist for our breeding program and will report directly to the Corn Breeder.
Responsibilities for this position include:
- Function as part of an operational team including seed activities manager, station manager, and consultant to plan and implement best possible use of available land and resources, providing winter services for nurseries, isolated crossing blocks, foundation inbred increases and pilot production of hybrids.
- Assist station manager and seed activities manager in developing and documenting best practices for winter nursery operations in Hawaii.
- Work with trait conversion manager to ensure timely conversion nursery cycles.
- Assist station manager in complying with agricultural policies of the following agencies: Kekaha Ag Assn.; Agribusiness Development Corp.; Hawaii Crop Improvement Assn. Attend meetings of various agencies, as needed, and by direction of the station manager and seed activities manager.
- Train and supervise staff and temporary workers in breeding nursery procedures including planting, pollinating, harvesting, drying and shipping. - Train equipment operators in efficient and safe handling of machinery used for planting, detasseling, harvesting and drying of nurseries.
- Serve as site safety officer ensuring compliance with BASF safety programs and responsible care program.

This team performs critical activities necessary to advance BPS's plant breeding and biotechnology projects from idea to marketplace as fast and effectively as possible.
Qualifications:
- M.S. degree in a agricultural related field or B.S. degree and 3 years experience, Associates degree and 6 years experience. BASF recognizes Institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent.
- Nursery experience which would include: pollinations, harvest, isoltaed crossing blocks, foundation line nbred increases and pilot production.
- Prior supervisory experience.
- Strong communications skills.
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills.
- Willingness to work outdoors and overtime during certain months of the year.
Preferred:
- Experience working in trait conversion or breeding nurseries in a tropical environment.
- Mechanical skills in operating, adjusting and making minor repairs of equipment used to plant, spray, detassel, harvest and dry nursery materials.
- Experience in working with field mapping software and global positioning systems (GPS).
