Field Research Biologist- Seeds and Traits R&D

Location: Virtual position located in the Lubbock, Texas area, USA

This Field Research Biologist position will conduct and/or manage the agronomic operations for all trial and nursery locations of Phytogen's Texas High Plains breeding program. The position will be virtual in nature, operating out of his/her home location with initial functional reporting to the cotton breeder at the Corcoran, CA site. The successful candidate will provide key input into the implementation and expansion of the program in this area. The position will require a high degree of independence and self motivation to plan and manage breeding nursery and trial sites throughout the Texas High Plains. Demonstrated hands-on experience in planting, maintaining and harvesting research plots is essential. Additional experience in evaluating cotton germplasm for commercial acceptability is preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop proficiency in nursery and yield trial database software, including field setup, field book development, printing field books, packets and labels, data entry and analyses, and harvest advancement.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair project equipment and facilities.
  • Supervise and train contingent staff for field and seed sample processing activities.
  • Conduct field research activities to include, but not limited to, summer and winter nurseries including domestic and occasional international travel, planting, thinning, note-taking, agronomics, harvesting, data analyses, reporting, processing, sampling, and shipping. Establish working relationships with grower-cooperators, current and potential customers, and operations department.
  • Travel to outlying locations and other research stations and laboratories as needed.
  • Contribute leadership, initiative and skills for implementing program and site activities and goals.
  • Participate and contribute to Human Resources, Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S), cross-functional teams and community activity programs.
  • Ensure DAS EH&S, Department of Transportation (DOT) and other company policies and regulations are met and enforced.

Qualifications:

  • Masters degree with three to five years experience, or Bachelors degree with five to eight years experience in Agronomy, Genetics, or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with operating and maintaining field equipment used to plant, maintain and harvest cotton breeding plots is essential.
  • Demonstrated leadership, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills are required. Initiative to effectively and efficiently work alone is critical while interacting within a broader team setting is also needed.
  • Appropriate understanding of plant breeding, agronomy, statistics and research is necessary.
  • Previous experience in cotton breeding is preferred.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a commercial drivers license (CDL) and a pesticide applicator's license within first quarter of employment is required.
  • Computer skills including Word, Excel, and MS Outlook are required, and the ability to learn additional software applications.

This position is a virutal position located in the Lubbock, Texas, USA area.
