Agricultural Research Farm Manager
Location: Woodland, California, USA Major responsibilities:
This position is responsible for managing a 40 acre tomato research farm. The person is responsible for all aspects of organizing the fertility, tillage, planting, irrigation, pest and weed control, general farm maintenance & harvest of research plots for seed saving and lab analysis. The person is also responsible for equipment maintenance in cooperation with the tomato breeder. In addition this position will be responsible to plant various research trial plots with growers.
- Manages fertility & irrigation for tomato production both in the nursery and the field.
- Organizes plantings on the farm and transplant outside research plots.
- Supervises tomato seed saving process from harvesting fruits, extracting seeds, and packing seeds.
- Supervise sampling tomato fruits for lab analysis.
- Calibrates sprayer and co-ordinate all pesticide applications of tomato plots.
- Maintains station research equipment.
- Organizes & hires seasonal labor as needed.
- Reports to processing tomato breeder.
- Oversees the seeding and growing of tomato transplants in the greenhouse.
- Coordinate farming suppliers and outside cooperators in Agriculture.
Qualifications:
Candidate should have a B.S. in Agronomy or related field, and Agricultural research with some experience in conducting plot trials. Person must have good mechanical knowledge, excellent planning and organization skills; strong interpersonal communication skills in English required, working knowledge of MS Office and common PC based software, speaking Spanish desired, good leadership skills, and team spirit.
- Must have valid California driver’s license.
- A current California pesticide applicator’s license.
- Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the country where the position is located.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work all hours to get the job done.
- Ability to lift at least 50lbs.
