Breeding Research Associate

Location: St. Louis, Missouri, USA

Accountability Objective

Kaiima Bio-Agritech is a breeding technology company with U.S. operations based in St. Louis, MO.  We are focused on the development of cutting edge tools to maximize the value of elite germplasm in key row crops.  Kaiima partners with leading seed companies and research institutions around the world to establish enhanced performing genetics.

Kaiima is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate to join our multi-disciplinary research & development team.  The Research Associate plays a key role in the design and execution of nursery and phenotyping activities.  Diverse projects will be managed by the research associate across our core crops of corn, soybean, rice, and wheat.  Effective teamwork across internal teams and external collaborators is critical.  Versatility and resourcefulness are important traits of the successful candidate.  

Principal Accountabilities

  • Operational leadership of US nurseries and trials including seed preparation, shipping, planting, pollinating, note taking, and harvest activities.
  • Maintain close interaction with nursery and trial service providers to ensure successful execution of activities throughout the growing season.
  • Management of inspections, phytosanitary certificates, import permits, and other procedures and documents required for international shipment of seed.
  • Accurate record keeping for nursery activities, plant inventory, and selection records using in-house management programs
  • Training and oversight of temporary employees and collaborators in field trials, nurseries and seed lab operations.
  • Management of research data
  • Write scientific reports and present at internal meetings.

Job Skills & Requirements:

  • Solid knowledge of  crop production
  • Able to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to organize and oversee multiple projects concurrently to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Flexibility to travel up to 40% of the time during peak seasons.
  • Ability to work in various field environments.
  • Competency with Microsoft Windows and Office Suite; strong capacity for learning and utilizing internal research management software.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively with internal and external partners, maintain the highest level of confidentiality, deliver excellent customer service and demonstrate professionalism that promotes a positive image of Kaiima.
  • Experience in crop research is preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of experience in agricultural research field required. Master’s degree preferred.
