Brassica Breeder

Location: Tuitjenhorn, The Netherlands

As Brassica breeder you will assume an important role within the Crucifer breeding team with a focus on cauliflower. You will become a member of a multidisciplinary Crucifer breeding research team. In cooperation with team members you develop the breeding strategy aiming the release of leading hybrids. You are a dedicated, enthusiastic, and result oriented individual who can make the difference in a competitive international market. You will have close interaction with the operational team, product development, and the marketing, commercial and production departments. Functional relationships extend into the Limagrain Vegetable Seed division.

You will report to the Global Lead Crucifer Breeding and are based at the Crucifer R&D station of Hazera in the Netherlands.

Your primary responsibilities:

  • Translate the crop R&D strategy into approved product-oriented breeding projects and operational plans. Actively steer on delivering leading hybrids, monitor and report on progress.
  • Manage all components of a successful commercial breeding program. This includes acquisition and management of germplasm, elite line development, hybrid development and evaluation, and elite seed production.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of the crop, products, and customers by liaising with marketing and sales.
  • Optimize breeding success by implementation and integration of breeding technologies (double haploids, markers, breeding decision support systems, etc.).
  • Travel to relevant markets for trial and product evaluation. Ensure objectivity and reliability, sound data processing, and fact based decision making.

Required skills and expertise:

  • PhD in Plant Breeding, Genetics, or related field or equivalent by working experience.
  • Strong interest in field evaluation.
  • Strong interest and background in molecular breeding techniques, database, and breeding support tool applications.
  • Multidisciplinary team player with strong communication skills and ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Strong problem solving and analytic skills and eyes for details.
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally frequently.
  • Proficient in English, proficient in Spanish or French a plus.

Desired skills and expertise:

  • Experience in a related crop.
  • Knowledge in electronic data capture and processing.
  • Agronomical background/ experience or vegetable crop research.
