Breeding Manager, Starch Potato
Location: Valthermond, The Netherlands

This starch is processed in factories in the Netherlands, Germany and Sweden and used as innovative ingredients for the food-, paper-, textile- and animal feed industry. Averis Seeds is a 100% subsidiary. With an enthusiastic team of 22 employees, the company focuses on development, multiplication and trade of starch potatoes. By offering a wide range of varieties the company is able to supply seed potatoes to the (member) growers that suit specific local conditions. Needless to state that these varieties are also well suited for processing in the factories. The breeding and research programme is carried out on several experimental fields in The Netherlands and Germany and in modern laboratories in the northern part of The Netherlands, near Emmen. The multiplication activities are being managed from the company headquarter in Veendam.
To fulfil the ambitious innovation objectives in the areas of efficiency and resistance, we are looking to expand the team at Averis Seeds with a decisive Breeding Manager Starch Potato.
Job
Developing disease resistant potato varieties with the highest starch and protein yield.
Responsible for all activities in the area of developing and introducing new starch potato varieties.
Initiate and implement the breeding programme.
Establish and coordinate crossing- and selection programme. Initiate and implement new diagnostic DNA markers in breeding programme and initiate new breeding developments.
Establish, execute and analyse experiments in the lab, greenhouses and on the field.
Collecting and documenting varietal characteristics to provide effective cultivation guidelines to growers.
Representative to the industry associations, customers, etc. and active maintenance of the knowledge network (institutes, universities and other companies).
The Breeding Manager reports to the R & D Manager, manages one Breeder and works closely with colleagues in the laboratory (molecular biology, plant pathology, quality traits and genetics) as well as on the field.
Profile
Innovative through knowledge of classical and modern driven breeding techniques.
Job requirements
At least a Master degree in plant sciences, preferably: plant breeding.
Or for example a master degree in plant growing, plant pathology or plant physiology.
Minimum of 5 years experience as Breeder is required.
Practical and scientific knowledge of modern molecular genetics of for instance: potato, tomato or pepper.
Willingness to travel occasionally (10%).
Good knowledge of English is required and knowledge of the German language is preferred.
