An opportunity to help a small scale organic farmer succeed, Jacobs Farm/Del Cabo is seeking a highly motivated individual to lead our Plant Breeding efforts in Los Cabos (Mexico) at the tip of the Baja California peninsula. Be part of a small team focused on breeding cherry tomatoes, tomatoes and basil for flavor , disease resistance and yield. Help with designs, development, execution, and implementation of breeding projects with a highly motivated and innovative group.

Responsibilities:

• Help lead and implement a breeding program for the development of innovative lines and hybrids for open field and protected production.
• Conduct breeding and screening tests of lines and hybrids at breeding sites throughout the Baja California peninsula.
• Travel up to 25% of time back roads and fields of the Baja peninsula.
• Be an active member of our team to discover and breed for flavor, innovative agronomy, disease resistance and yield for organically grown cherry tomatoes, tomatoes, basil and other crops in the future such as sweet peppers and peas.
• Be part of our New Product Team to put food with flavor on every family table.

Skills/ Experience/Training In:

• PhD in Plant Breeding, Genetics, Crop Science or related field of study.
• Field trial, managing field selection and evaluation of varieties.
• Technical proficiency, scientific creativity, and collaboration with others.
• Use of markers, familiarity with Agribase helpful.
• Excellent organizational skills with close attention to detail with the ability to balance multiple tasks and achieve deadlines.
• Microsoft Office applications.

Desired Skills/Experience:

• 5+ years experience managing a vegetable or row crop breeding program.
• Knowledge of experimental design as applied to plant breeding.
• Experience in Solanaceous Breeding and Genetics.
• Bilingual Spanish/English.
