Summary:

Manage pre-commercial field activities yielding high quality and pure seed while utilizing resources effectively and efficiently.

 

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Locate and secure field isolations for planting seed/stecks-
    • Satisfying isolation distance requirements per SOP’s.
    • Establish and maintain a working relationship with pre-commercial growers ensuring grower and BTS expectations are mutually understood (Includes finding new growers to contract with to meet isolation requirements).
    • Accurately record and report all GPS coordinates as well as acres per isolation.
  • Document-
    • Create detailed field maps of all isolations following SOP’s.
    • Take detailed, electronic field notes through-out the season (examples below).
      • Harvest and planting dates.
      • Fertilizer, fungicide, herbicide application date and rates.
      • Regular plant status/evaluations (size, health, bolting dates, flowering rates, uniformity, etc).
      • Shipping and receiving inventory tracking.
      • Complete all paperwork and processes as directed through regulated agencies and BTS SOP’s
      • Manage any issues requiring extra attention within each field.
      • Ensure all activities are completed in a timely manner outlined in BTS’s SOP.
  • Plant pre-commercial nurseries, harvest/transplant stecks, harvest seed-
    • This includes making field lay-outs.
    • Seed and steck inventory management .
    • Manage contract labor teams to ensure the correct items are planted and harvested appropriately.
  • Develop and improve cultural field practices-
    • Field preparation/maintenance prior to and during field use (lime, fertilizer, fungicide, herbicide, etc) and irrigation management.
    • Advise growers and manage BTS employees/contract labor to implement agronomic practices to yield a high quality and pure seed.
    • Execute accurate timing on chemical application, irrigation, clipping, cutting, and harvest
    • Identify problems early and implement solutions in a timely manner minimizing/eliminating quality and purity risk.
    • Manage trials and continue to review cultural practice for continuous improvement.
  • In addition to managing BTS/Contract manpower, you will be required to perform labor field duties including but not limited to spraying, fertilizing, fence building, disking, combining, and rouging.
  • Travel-
    • Assistance in the Willamette Valley and other program support outside of Roseburg will be required.
    • Miles driven per year could exceed 30,000.
    • Out-of-state seasonal travel is required.
    • Out of country travel could be required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (prefer a concentration in agriculture).
  • 3-5 years of field experience (prefer crop management experience).
  • Able to obtain a Private Pesticide Applicator’s License.
  • Require a reliable, motivated self-starter with leadership and organizational skills.
  • Ability to multitask is imperative.
  • Capable of using MS Excel and familiarity with Windows based applications.
  • Ability drive a forklift and pull a loaded trailer.
  • Ability to pass background check and must have valid driver’s license.
