Wheat Trait Development Coordinator

Location: Sabin, Minnesota, USA

Job description

The two main responsibilities of this role, as Wheat Trait Development Coordinator, are (1) to manage the Trait Development Wheat operations in North-America by functionally managing a team of wheat agronomists, ensuring proper trial implementation and management, field trial requirements & seed logistics, within the required timeframes, and (2) to manage the Trait Development site in Sabin, Minnesota for all crops on site. The incumbent will live in the Sabin area.

As Site manager for Sabin, the incumbent will:

  • Manage a team of agronomists and seasonal employees on Sabin site (resource reporting), and coordinate the daily activities for all crops on site.
  • Be responsible for compliance with Safety, Biosafety and Stewardship on site;
  • Be the local responsible for the budget and cost center, and support Trait Development Managers to develop capital and operational budgets for Trait Development activities in North-America.

As Trait Development Coordinator for wheat, the incumbent will:

  • Functionally managing a team of wheat agronomists located in several site in North-America, and ensuring proper trial implementation and management, field trial requirements & seed logistics, within the required timeframes;
  • Contribute to the strategic planning for wheat and ensure implementation of Wheat Business plans under the leadership of Trait Development and Business Managers;
  • Elaborate the short and mid-term regional plan and supervise the implementation and execution of the Global Trait Development program for Wheat in North-America closely interacting and coordinating with relevant other functions, e.g. Breeding, Reg. Science, Research, Regulatory affairs, Stewardship, Supply Chain, etc.;
  • Bring wheat crop expertise in assessing new traits as well as trait physiology and data analysis in order to optimally test and select new traits by implementing the principles of elite event selection (GM) and elite allele combination selection (non-GM);
  • Coordinate, supervise and report on all GM and non-GM R&D field trials necessary for advancing events through the elite event selection process in North-America; Accountable for compliance for confined field trials; Foster stewardship in all TD activities; Coordinate data collection and data analysis of all R&D field trials in North-America and report to the Trait Development Manager;
  • Maintain an overview on the key Wheat activities in North-America in the area of research, breeding, supply chain, public institutes, competitors Understand in order to bring into perspective competitive and market landscape, farmer relationship in support of setting up and consolidate Trait Development operations; Stay  up-to-date on local seed regulations to obtain the necessary approvals (registration, import permit, etc.) in time for the trials.

Your qualifications

  • The selected candidate is required to possess the following:
  • Ph.D. in Agriculture, Biology or Biochemistry with comprehensive understanding of wheat agronomy and plant genetics;
  • Minimum 5 – 7 years experience of which at least 3 in (relevant) Field Trials;
  • Understanding of plant genetics to develop, execute and revise SOP's to assure QC/QA and regulatory compliance plus event purity;
  • Expertise in plant breeding and field plot execution plus experience in the execution of confined trials;
  • Knowledge in Wheat agronomy and experience with all field activities from seeding to harvesting;
  • Excellent communication and reporting skills;
  • Project Management and organization & planning;
  • Leadership and Management skills;
  • Understanding in regulatory and business environment in North-America is an advantage;
  • Willingness to frequently travel within the region with occasional intercontinental travel.
  • Salary and grade level will be commensurate with experience and/or education level.
