Territory Sales Representative

Johnny's Selected Seeds is a local, privately held, employee-owned seed producer and merchant headquartered in Winslow, Maine, USA. The company was established in 1973 by our Founder and Chairman, Rob Johnston, Jr. Johnny's mission is helping families, friends, and communities to feed one another by providing superior seeds, tools, information and service.
To this end, Johnny's works as a team of employee owners and is currently seeking to hire a Territory Sales Representative. As an employee-owner with Johnny’s, you could be part of a select team focused on delivering personalized service while providing superior seeds, tools, and information.
The Territory Sales Representative, located in our Fairfield, Maine office, serves as a member of a territory team and as such plays a significant role as a team player and leader focused on customer satisfaction and attaining the long and short term goals for the territory.
The ideal candidate is confident, loyal and self motivated, able to thrive without direct supervision and possesses a positive, can-do attitude.
Occasional overnight travel, such as visits to current and potential clients and trade shows is required.
Job Requirements
- Present and sell company products to current and potential clients
- Service existing accounts, obtain orders, and establish new accounts through planning in conjunction with team members.
- Organize a daily work schedule to call on existing and/or potential customers.
- Co-manage offsite trials with Product Managers.
- Achieve annual sales goals.
- Communicate new product and service opportunities, special developments, information or feedback gathered through field activity to customers and appropriate company staff.
- Assist with product development and pricing.
- Responsible for developing and driving the territory sales forecast
- Coordinate an overall territory plan with the Support and Marketing team members that meet the yearly plan and five year strategy.
- Keep management and territory team informed by submitting activity and results reports, such as daily call reports, weekly work plans and monthly/annual territory analysis.
- Engage in business planning and long term development with clients.
- Enhance sales staff accomplishments and competence by planning delivery of solutions, answering technical and procedural questions for less experienced team members, teaching improved processes and mentoring team members.
- Provides input and direction to the team on marketing events and support required to meet the overall team goals.
- Crafts sales presentations specific to customer type and needs in conjunction with other territory team members.
- Monitors competition to enhance sales efforts focus by gathering current marketplace information on pricing, products, delivery schedules, shipping fees, merchandising, sales volume in the territory, etc.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, participating in professional societies, etc.
- Required to make judgment decisions and adapt to changing work situations, grasp and apply new ideas and communicate with various personalities at all levels.
- Contribute to performance reviews of all territory team members
Education Requirements
- Possess strong business acumen
- Preference will be given to sales professionals with 3-5 years sales experience in the seed/agriculture industry
- A four year science or horticultural degree with experience in advising, training, or counseling in a team and customer focused environment preferred
- Proficiency with PC’s and Microsoft Office products
- Maintain a professional appearance and provide a positive company image to the public
- Ability to manage multiple priorities
- Exceptional “Outside” sales and marketing, customer focused experience with an impressive track record within a B2B setting
- The ability to present detailed information in a clear, systematic manner
- Ability to work towards a common goal-Gives more than takes
- Proven ability to learn difficult information
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Entrepreneurial spirit- “outside the box thinker”
- Determination – Prepared to focus on goals until they are achieved. Tireless worker; mentally tough
- Sales skills: skilled negotiator, problem solver, and closer with the ability to anticipate needs, empathize, influence and develop long-term business relationships
- Track record of meeting or exceeding stretch sales goals
Essential Physical Requirements
- Ability to freely access all areas and locations of the business
- Ability to work varied hours/days as business dictates
- Ability to sit at a computer for at least 80% of the work day
