Breeding Assistant, Onion
Location: Pasco, Washington, USA For the Company’s Long Day Onion breeding activities in Pasco WA, we are looking for a Breeder Assistant (full time).
The breeding assistant will work under the direction of the breeder, and as part of the Hazera Seeds breeding team based in Pasco, WA. This position will be responsible for carrying out the day-to-day activities of the breeding program on time and to breeder specifications.
Your tasks & responsibilities:
- Planting and harvest of bulb trials and breeding seed production fields
- Supervising the construction of, and care for, seed production isolation cage
- Trial evaluation
- Field scouting and organization
- Sorting and selection of breeding material
- Breeding seed inventory management, sample preparation and shipping
- Supervision of breeding seed cleaning and storage
- Some travel in the Western US and internationally for company meetings
- Supervision of temporary labor during planting, harvest and processing of seed and bulbs
The candidate will also be expected to work as part of a quickly evolving team that includes seed production, sales, and operations, as well as to communicate with international partners. This position has the potential to develop from assistant to associate breeder, and beyond. Must be able to lift 50#, and work in unfavorable field conditions for long periods.
Your profile:
- Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, agronomy, plant pathology, genetics or related discipline.
- Detail oriented and observant
- Highly motivated and responsible
- Possess excellent communication skills
- Proficient in Spanish
- Interested in long term employment, growth within the company
