Senior Research Associate

Location: Johnston, Iowa, USA

The Senior Research Associate will initiate, monitor quality and timing, trouble shoot, and guide trait inbred conversions through the Maize Trait Integration Process. 

The SRA will have responsibility for all non-US inbred conversions and will need to communicate, plan, and project conversion needs of non-US projects, and execute the conversion plan between the TI Center and requesting project while ensuring compliance.

  • Exercises technical discretion in the design, execution and interpretation of experiments that contribute to project strategies.
  • Supports research activity by assisting in planning and effectively conducting experiments; recording and analyzing data.
  • Ensures efficient daily operation of laboratories and/or field locations.
  • Conducts experiments adapting procedures as required.
  • Plans new experiments in consultation with manager.
  • May exercise limited technical discretion in the design, execution and interpretation of experiments.
  • Summarizes experiments, manages and analyzes data and prepares reports.
  • Maintains or improves efficient daily work place operations.
  • Supervises and is accountable for assigned projects and coordinates experiments with other locations.
  • May organize and supervise work of other employees.
  • May operate equipment and assure equipment operates properly.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Forecast, monitor and report the status, number, quality and type of conversion going through TI for non-US projects through TI software systems.
  • Develop and execute annual plans with all non-US countries for TI Conversion needs according to their agreed trait strategies.
  • Coordinate inbred conversion requests and workloads with TI Centers using TI data base.
  • Ensure that conversion databases are current, accurate, and are delivering accurate real time status.
  • Summarize experiments, manage and analyze data, including molecular marker data, and prepare reports for stakeholders.
  • Ensure regulatory, shipping, permitting, and trait purity compliance is met for all experiments and seed movements.
  • Work closely with other TI SRAs responsible for NA and experimental TI Conversions, to ensure harmony of processes.
  • Develop and propose improvements in functionality to TI tracking and reporting software and databases.

    Other duties include:
  • Frequent communication to all partner groups and stakeholders on status and forecasting of non US conversions;
  • May assist in field operations or travel to TI Centers;
  • May serve on teams appropriate to specific research project;
  • May travel to TI Centers;
  • Organize conversion requests from all non-US countries into a usable, executable, and communicable annual plan;
  • Determine and solve “choke points” in non-US TI conversion processes; Investigates, creates and develops new methods and technologies for optimizing logistics, quality and timing of non-US TI conversions; and
  • Develop and provide remedy for conversions that are off track or do not meet quality.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in an agriculture or scientific related field and minimum of 2 to 4 years of industry related experience is required.
  • Masters degree in an agriculture or scientific related field and 0 to 2 years of industry related experience is preferred.
  • Or equivalent amount of relevant education and experience.
  • Competency to perform activities requiring broad theoretical grounding and understanding of classes of problems in a specified arena (i.e. chemistry, biology, agriculture).
  • Familiarity with computers and statistical analysis.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills.
