Research Associate - Breeding/Genomics

Location: Lubbock, Texas, USA

Chromatin is seeking a highly motivated individual with the ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary Sorghum Research Team located in Lubbock, Texas. The Research Associate will have primary responsibility for coordinating genomic projects within the breeding program. Secondary responsibility will include support of nursery operations and data management.
 
The Field Research Associate will have the opportunity to support the Sorghum Breeding program as well as Trait Development by coordinating multiple marker and trait development projects in field plantings within the breeding program. Additionally, this individual will assist in coordinating various sorghum nurseries implementing and administering Standard Operating Procedures, QA, QC, and safety procedures. This is an excellent opportunity to work with leading edge technology and talented cross functional scientists seeking to deliver the very best sorghum genetics.

Responsibilities will include:

Coordinate with external stakeholders in genomics projects underway in the breeding program, both intra and inter-company.

  • Manage all scheduling and field operations associated with marker and trait development projects underway to insure high quality, timely operations.
    • Data collection/phenotyping as dictated by project plan.
    • Sampling for genomic/compositional analysis.
    • Provide timely updates to all stakeholders involved in each project.

Assist in managing nursery operations.

  • Seed preparation.
  • Pollinating, harvest, processing and inventory.
  • Manage temporary seasonal staff.
  • Participate in counter season nurseries; pollinating, harvest, etc.

Assist in data management.

  • Become proficient in the use of Agrobase program software.
    • Trial creation
    • Data entry
    • Data analysis
  • Support nursery inventory management.

Provide support and management of seasonal/temporary employees for other program needs and operations as time permits.

Interact with scientists and breeders on and off-site for project related needs.

Participate in task-related document creation and process review for job-related activities.

Ensure that company assets are well cared for and properly maintained.

Ensure that the breeding team is trained and compliant with all safety policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Required Skills/Experience:

  • MS in Plant Science, Plant Breeding, or related field  and/or BS and at least 4 years of appropriate work experience in a breeding program with marker/trait development activities.
  • Familiarity with breeding and research methodologies including statistical design and data analysis.
  • General knowledge of crop production, farming practices, and farm equipment operation.
  • Working knowledge of statistics.
  • Ability to travel overnight.
  • Documented individual leadership skills including excellent organizational and record keeping skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer skills in word processing and spreadsheet programs.
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary/multicultural research team.
