Senior Research Associate

Location: Hermiston, Oregon, USA

We are currently hiring a Senior Research Associate in Hermiston, Oregon.

This position serves as a primary field contact for seed production which includes: grower management and support (acreage planning, quality control, etc.), coordinating integrated pest management program and production research programs for both Research and Parent Seed production.

  • Supervise field work, equipment/labor resources, station operations and prepare reports as assigned by manager. 
  • The individual will provide leadership for managing seed production fields including; field selection, working with cooperators, outside vendor and/or internal resources for field operations, soil fertility, IPM, etc.  
  • Serves as primary source of agronomic expertise for activities involved in hybrid seed production including soil types, land suitability, soil fertility, herbicides, insecticides, integrated pest management and all other aspects of crop management.
  • The successful candidate is responsible for all aspects of grower contracts (implementation, price elections, contract elections, contract questions, payment problems) in a specified geographical area. Assists in the seed acreage contract allocations to growers.  
  • Gathers management information for specific inbreds, including fertilizer, insecticide, and herbicide recommendations.
  • This individual will stay current on agronomic practices and government agricultural programs as well as implement and maintain quality standards and provide support for all aspects of seed processing including:  seed drying, conditioning, treating and packaging, inventory management, and product staging and shipping.
  • Additional duties are to organize, supervise and mentor research associates/research assistants in agronomy/pest management, irrigation management, proper roguing, detasseling and harvest management to maximize seed quantity and quality.  
  • Act as station coordinator for research management system.
  • Support development of SOP’s, work instructions, protocol/procedure development and other documentation needs.  
  • Support and participate in implementation of DuPont Production Systems.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree in ag-related field and 2-4 years experience working with seed growers required or equivalent amounts of relevant education and experience.
  • Knowledge of production agriculture and production plant operations preferred.
  • Knowledge of field equipment and techniques (irrigation, cutting, wheel-pulling, delays, scouting, etc.) for corn production preferred.
  • Priority management.  
  • Willingness to participate in administering safety programs and promoting safety culture.
  • The candidate will be expected to work using good safety and risk management habits and have the ability to adjust quickly to changing conditions and anticipate needs.
  • Good verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to provide work instructions training and supervise/coach others.
  • Problem solving capabilities.
  • Conflict management skills.
  • Ability to make independent decisions.
  • Advanced PC skills; ability to learn proprietary Pioneer software.
  • Willingness to work in a variety of areas (field, station, warehouse). Position involves repetitive motion and/or repetitive lifting up to 60 lbs.
  • Willingness to work both outdoors and indoors in hot, cold, wet and dry conditions.
  • Overtime hours including weekend work required during seasonal peaks.
  • Willingness to work evening shifts as needed.
