Monsanto’s wheat breeding program develops high quality wheat varieties for all major market classes in the United States. This exceptional team utilizes state-of-the-art breeding methodologies and technologies to enhance performance, quality and disease resistance. We are currently seeking highly motivated research support individuals. The Research Assistant will participate in all aspects of the wheat breeding program including planting, seed packaging, agronomic/field maintenance, note-taking, harvest, threshing and quality trait testing. He/She will also be required to direct seasonal employees in these activities.
We have positions in Twin Falls, Idaho and Yuma, Arizona.
Key Business Accountabilities:
- Work with breeders to accurately execute early population nurseries, research field trials, quality trait testing and other activities associated with wheat breeding program
- Process and analyze seed/plot samples following defined protocols and quality standards
- Participate and supervise seasonal labor and crew members in executing seasonal activities to include plot setup, seed packaging, tissue sampling planting, crossing, note-taking, agronomic field maintenance, harvest, threshing, data collection and quality trait testing
- Assist Early Generation Coordinator in greenhouse set-up and maintenance, greenhouse or field crossing
- Assist Pathology Lead in set-up of disease screening nurseries including generating inoculum, inoculating and recording ratings
- Assist in the management of field trial set-up and data input using defined protocols, IT systems and equipment. To include: handheld devices and proprietary software systems
- Assist in implementing and maintaining an up-to-date inventory management system
- Maintain a high standard of quality, accuracy, consistency, and efficiency in performing duties
- Identify and communicate areas for process improvement
- Work in a team environment to ensure that all daily activities are completed on-time and meet high quality standards
- Participate in and comply with all established ESH programs
- Other administrative tasks in off-season as necessary
Core Business/Functional Skills and Education:
- BS degree or equivalent with experience working in an agricultural setting
- Experience with agricultural equipment including planters, combines or other small plot research equipment is desired
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Proficiency in mobile and desktop software technology including Microsoft Office
- Ability to work effectively with interdisciplinary teams
- A decisive, innovative and creative personality
