Position description

We are seeking an Associate Breeder for Onions to be based at our breeding station in Yuma, Arizona. This position will be responsible for the implementation of our Short Day onion breeding activities, under the guidance of our Onion Breeder.

Key responsibilities

  • Assume full responsibility and manage all aspects of the onion breeding programs, in accordance with guidelines from the Onion Breeder.
  • Plan, organize and perform practical tasks related to the onion breeding program and station management
  • Select, lead, train and evaluate field staff
  • Manage breeding working collections, including data management, storage, packaging and shipments
  • Keep abreast of relevant market developments.
  • Assist the Onion Breeder in implementing the breeding program and managing the breeding station.
  • Manage expenses and monitor against plan and budgets.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements pertaining to safety, health and environmental protection.
  • Other related duties, as required.

Qualifications:

  • MSc in Genetics & Plant Breeding or equivalent onion breeding experience
  • Practical experience in onion breeding is a plus
  • Physically capable of handling the required tasks and range of working conditions
  • Ability to work independently and within a team setting
  • Good people leadership skills
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • US citizen or able to legally work in the US
