Onion Breeder
Location: Porterville, California, USA For the Company’s Short and Intermediate Day Onion breeding activities in NAFTA we are looking for a Breeder (full time).
Under the responsibility of the Global Lead Allium Breeding, the Breeder establishes and executes the breeding methodology for the SD & ID Onion program, in order to create innovative and competitive onion varieties for the NAFTA market. The Breeder will be based at our breeding facilities close to Porterville, California.
Your tasks & responsibilities:
- Manage, organize and carry out the SD and ID Onion programs for NAFTA, in agreement with the company’s crop strategy and guidelines
- Establish, under the Global Lead Allium, the appropriate breeding strategy for the crop and implement a genetic improvement program to create new and original onion varieties in line with market needs
- Coordinate and execute, together with the Associate Onion Breeder, the implementation of approved breeding projects through a network of breeding stations and screening sites in NAFTA
- Remain abreast with scientific and technology developments and ensure sufficient input and support of the Breeding Technology Department for the breeding programs
- Maintain regular contacts with other onion breeders in the company, as well as with commercial staff
- Provide regular, transparent reports on progress made in breeding projects as well as on expenses made on behalf of the program
- Ensure the provision of uniform and stable parental lines and sufficient quantities of Elite/Basic seed
- Provide leadership to the Associate SD & ID Onion Breeder, Technicians and seasonal field staff
- Implement and monitor compliance of company policies on safety, health and environment
Your profile:
- Education: PhD in Genetics & Plant Breeding (or MSc, but with ample crop breeding experience)
- Well organized, methodical and able to multitask
- Capacity to manage a breeding team
- Good communication skills
- Working knowledge of Spanish is a plus
- Prepared to work at different sites in NAFTA, with seasonal peaks of activities (including frequent travel)
