Plant Breeder

Location: Kimberly, Idaho, USA

Reports to: Director of Breeding and Product Management
FLSA status: Full Time - Exempt

Summary:

The responsibilities of this position, located at the Kimberly, ID research facility, are to breed and develop new varieties of hybrid sugar beet seed for the sugar beet industry and growers. Additionally, this position directs up to 5 breeding and research staff. The position is tightly connected with and has reporting structure to the Sugarbeet Breeding Group of KWS SAAT AG. Basically, this position is part of the worldwide active Sugarbeet Breeding Programs, and participates in all breeding projects related to the North America markets.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and manage the Curly Top and Roundup Ready breeding programs, including line development, disease nurseries, yield trails, and variety development for the Western North America Curly Top Markets.
  • Also, conduct and manage a Backcross Breeding program and pre-basic and experimental seed production at the Kimberly, Idaho research facility.
  • Manage extensive database management responsibilities for breeding activities.
  • Perform and analyze statistical data, prepare reports and present at the annual breeder’s reporting meetings.
  • Work closely with other Betaseed and KWS breeding teams.
  • Manage and provide development opportunities for the Kimberly breeding team.
  • Forecast and develop CT, pre-basic and experimental hybrid seed production and RR project budgets and priorities.
  • Active involvement as a team member with marketing, sales, finance and product production groups to support and enhance the sugar beet product portfolio for Betaseed.
  • Establish and strengthen contacts with USDA and other public research institutes.
  • Hire, train and manage the staff for Betaseed research programs.
  • Assist in the establishment of quality management procedures and protocols.
  • Other duties as needed by the business.

Qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent experience in plant breeding and genetics.
  • Seven to 10 years of working experience in related fields.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in statistical data analysis.
  • Knowledge of molecular breeding tools preferred.
  • Proficiency in data management, and computer skills (i.e. MS Office and project related databases)
  • Creative, self-motivated and strong ability to foster a team environment.
  • Ability to manage staff effectively.
  • Strong leadership, communication, presentation and project management skills.
  • Able to travel for research meetings and training, domestic and international.
