Monsanto Vegetable Seeds, the largest developer, grower and marketer of fruit and vegetable seeds in the world, currently has an opening for a Technology Development Assistant in the Central Valley of California region. Our hybrids improve nutrition, boost crop yields, limit spoilage and reduce the need for chemicals. We have a vision that with age-old wisdom and modern science we can lessen hunger and promote the health of both the planet and its people. This position plays an integral part in supporting a Technology Development Representative (TDR) in the Central Valley region, one of our key market segments in the USA.
Robust data sets will be collected and analyzed to develop products for advancement to our pipeline portfolios in melons, onions, sweet corn, beans & sweet pepper. In addition data sets will be collected in support of product advancement in processor tomato, watermelon, broccoli, and squash. The conversion of this raw data to features, advantages and benefits that add value for our customers is core to the mission of Technology Development. Key Business Accountabilities:
Work closely with Seminis TDRs to conduct and assist on all Technology Development activities in the Central Valley (CA). These include but are not limited to:
- Assist the TDR on the planning, implementation, maintenance and evaluation of field trials
- Evaluate product performance, collect and provide data to the TDR’s utilizing in house data collection systems (FTS) that will support product advancement
- Assist TDR on harvesting yield trials of all vegetable species
- Monitor and report on field trial maturities; provide field trial harvest estimates for a range of products in each trial; coordinate trial harvest dates with TDR & plant breeder schedules
- Assist in collecting/shipping samples for analysis by the Vegetable Quality Research Laboratory in Woodland, CA
- Help strengthen Seminis relationships in the Central Valley with Growers, Dealers and university personnel
- Participate and help on planning/promotions meetings with the TDR and cooperators
Core Business/Functional Skills and Education:
- BS degree in Horticulture, Agronomy, Crop Sciences, Plant Pathology, Entomology, and/or related field and be competent in Plant Sciences, Agriculture and Field Botany and
- MS Degree in Horticulture, Agronomy, Crop Sciences, Plant Pathology, Entomology, and/or related field and be competent in Plant Sciences, Agriculture and Field Botany
- Strong interpersonal skills and strong capability to evaluate trait performance & to collect accurate data based on protocols.
- Must be flexible with both a work schedule as well as assigned duties. Work requires occasional overnight travel. Must be willing to work in the Central Valleys field conditions year round.
- Must possess behavioral competencies such as initiative and foresight, agility, and results orientation.
- Must be able to balance multiple tasks, possess strong time management skills, and prioritize workloads.
- Courage and candor - must possess integrity and honesty in their actions and communications.
- Must be a safe driver with clean DMV record.
- Experience with vegetable crops
- Demonstrable horticultural and/or agronomic skills
