Assistant Strawberry Breeder

Location: Camarillo, California, USA

TITLE: Research Associate III – Strawberry Breeding
LOCATION: Camarillo, CA
CLASSIFICATION: Full-time, Regular

JOB SUMMARY:

  • Assist in hybridization, selection, and testing of strawberry germplasm.
  • Ensure successful trialing through the implementation of excellent grower practices in seedling fields and test plots.
  • Collect and manage breeding data and database.

 JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, Horticulture or Agricultural Science preferred, and/or equivalent farm management experience
  • 5+ years experience in plant breeding or horticultural research
  • Strong knowledge of agronomic concepts; plant nutrition, soil fertility, plant physiology.
  • Strong knowledge of experimental design and basic statistics
  • Bilingual communications skills (English/Spanish) preferred. Good communicator.
  • Self-starter, hands-on with excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • California driver’s license and the ability to be covered under company-sponsored vehicle insurance program are also required

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in the evaluation of hybrid seedlings and selections for horticultural characteristics, encompassing field ratings, yield, shelf life, and flavor.
  • Work cooperatively with plant breeding and research staff to develop and maintain field trials on Driscoll’s and off-site test locations.
  • Assist in growing of company research farm and test plots.
  • Develop test plot summary reports, maps, and production curves from spreadsheets and database.
  • Travel to other research facilities and D.S.A. contract grower sites and assist in the evaluation of test varieties at these locations.
  • Collect relevant patent data in a timely manner.
  • Occasionally guide growers, customers, and co-workers on tours of Driscoll breeding and research programs and facilities.
  • Identify potential parent material and crosses and work with supervisor to develop crossing program.
  • Work cooperatively with plant breeding and research staff to develop and maintain field trials on Driscoll’s and off-site test locations.
  • Create, develop and report experiments for cultural practices.
  • Develop fact sheets of the promising selections using current yield data.
  • Collaborate with farm managers in all testing and breeding locations, creating maps, productions curves and entering flavor and shipping data to the data base.
  • Organize and distribute flavor test for all Camarillo area locations.
  • Follow company policies and practices while representing Driscoll’s in an ethical and business-like manner in all interactions with employees, government agencies, growers, suppliers, etc.
  • Ensure safekeeping of proprietary varieties and confidential information.
  • Promote a positive work environment.
