Research Associate, Sorghum Breeding
Location: College Station, Texas, USA Ceres, Inc. is a leading developer of high-yielding energy crops that can be planted as feedstocks for use in bioenergy production. Its development efforts cover switchgrass, miscanthus, sorghum and other dedicated energy crops. Energy crops represent ideal species to deploy many of the tools developed of the last 75 years for row crops. RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work as a team member in a sorghum breeding program bioenergy applications
- Assist in all aspects of sorghum breeding and field trials in accordance with business goals
- Maintenance of research plots in the field including operation of small plot equipment
- Data collection from field nurseries, crossing blocks and greenhouse plants
- Propagation and maintenance of plants in the greenhouse
- Harvesting, cleaning and inventorying of seed samples
- Field trial set up and planting
- Work to manage nurseries for making crosses and other seed multiplication
- Assist in winter nursery operations in Mexico or Puerto Rico
- Deliver progress reports to management
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors Degree in Agronomy, Plant Breeding, Genetics, Crop Science or Biology or related field and 2+ years of relevant experience in the seed industry preferred
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to work effectively in a team
- Farm experience desired
- Good written and oral communications skills
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to obtain a Commercial Pesticide Applicators license
- Ability to work outdoors in the field in hot conditions
