Trait Characterization and Development Intern (6 months)

Location: Woodland, California, USA

Pioneer Hi-Bred, a DuPont business, is currently seeking a Trait Characterization and Development Intern in Woodland, California.

The Trait Characterization and Development research intern program is a 6-month internship designed to collect field data about the performance of soybeans in a controlled environment.

Interns in the program will be expected to participate in all aspects of the project's activities. In addition, each intern will be expected to have a small research program that they will present at the conclusion of the internship.

The Intern will assume primary responsibility for a soybean trait discovery experiment at the Wooldand, CA research center.

The intern will report to Scott Sebastian (who is located in Johnston, IA) but will be under the local direction of Eric Hoeft (who is located in Woodland, CA). When not working on the soybean project, the intern will assist Eric with his sunflower breeding program.

Daily activities include but are not limited to seed packaging, planting, tissue collection, hybridization, pesticide spraying, data collection, and harvest. During peak times of the year extended working hours will be required.

Qualifications:

  • College Sophomore standing or above, and completion of introductory coursework in agronomy, plant sciences, horticulture, and/or molecular biology.
  • Excellent written/verbal communication, computer and organizational skills are required.
  • Candidates should posses a demonstrated ability to work effectively on multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • The candidate must have the ability to work as a strong team member in addition to working independently when needed.
  • Ability to operate small plot machinery is required.
  • Ability to record, organize, and store data in common spreadsheet software is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both English and Spanish is desired.
