Plant Breeder

Location: Lubbock, Texas, USA

Chromatin is seeking a highly motivated individual with the ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary sorghum breeding team.

The breeder’s primary responsibility will be to conduct a sorghum hybrid development breeding program utilizing the latest in breeding technologies to develop superior sorghum products for the emerging “Cleantech” markets. Breeding focus will be on the development of high yielding products with value added traits directed toward thermo chemical/bioenergy, 2nd generation biofuels, and high value chemical applications. This individual will interact with other breeders, genomic and transgenic teams, commercial seed and biomass teams as well as seed operations. The incumbent will oversee the administration of various large breeding projects, and assist in recruiting, training, development and retention of personnel, budget management, and care and maintenance of company assets. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a breeding program that will lead to the development of superior high yielding, stable, commercial sorghum hybrids with specific traits desired by “Cleantech” bioprocessors and other end users.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of Chromatin sorghum germplasm and commercial products.
  • Recruit, train, develop, and retain high quality research support staff.
  • Ensure that the breeding team is trained and compliant with all safety policies and procedures.
  • Budget management.

Qualifications Required Skills / Experience:

  • PhD in plant breeding and genetics or related field.
  • Strong background in plant breeding, genetics, statistics, and molecular technologies.
  • Proficiency with database applications, data analysis, and spreadsheet software.
  • Highly self-motivated, detail-oriented, and innovative.
  • Ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to write and speak in English fluently.

Desired Skills / Experience:

  • PhD in plant breeding and genetics or related field with 2 to 3 years experience in a hybrid plant breeding program.
  • Proven track record in a commercial breeding program, strong knowledge of modern technical approaches of germplasm improvement.
  • Familiarity with applications of molecular marker technologies to applied plant breeding.
  • Excellent leadership and people skills, effective verbal communication, and ability to thrive in a team based work environment.
  • Knowledge and experience in field operations and agronomy.
  • Record of innovation and process improvement in an applied breeding program.
  • An interest and passion to create new innovative products for the renewable “Cleantech” space.
  • Sorghum experience.
