Software Development Specialist

Location: Johnston, Iowa or Hayward, California, USA

Pioneer Hi-Bred, a DuPont business, is currently seeking a Software Development Specialist in either Johnston, IA or Hayward, CA to join the Trait Discovery Informatics. This is an expanded role for software engineers with a focus on Bioinformatics. Your domain specific knowledge in Bioinformatics will be used as you create solutions for molecular biologists. As a staff specialist, you will be expected to address architecture of large scale systems using HPC and are able to provide technical leadership to a team of developers on a large project.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Position requires the individual to develop software and systems according to agreed specification, either documented by a person in an analyst role, or specifications that the employee creates independently.
In this position you will design, develop and deliver solutions for use by researchers. In many cases you will be expected to maintain it over time. In addition, this position will include assisting in the design and development of the scientific computing infrastructure which provides resources to computational researchers, or for other application projects.
This position will require learning and operating in-house software developed by other staff members.
It will require managing large databases and using tools that can retrieve data from external, public domain hosts.
This position will also require technical leadership skills that include: software architecture, database design, project management, quality control and tools for long term, low effort maintenance.
Most of your efforts will be to facilitate annotation of genes and genomic data.
Use of HPC related tools will be standard practice.
Ideal candidate will have both GUI a experience, pipeline development experience, HPC experience and large data management experience.
This position reports to the software development manager within Bioinformatics.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree in genetics, genomics, bioinformatics or computer science and 7 years of industry related experience required or equivalent amounts of relevant education and experience required. Master's degree preferred.
  • The position is primarily a software development position, but requires at least 5 years of domain expertise in Bioinformatics acquired in an industrial setting.
  • It requires advanced knowledge of object oriented programming practices in compiled languages and demonstrated GUI interface development success.
  • It also requires experience with large amounts of genetic and genomic data.
  • The required skills for this position include:
    • advanced .NET/C# (5 or more years);
    • advanced UNIX skills (5 or more years);
    • demonstrated frequent use of relational databases along with the ability to design as needed;
    • frequent exposure to scripting languages (Perl, Python, PHP, Ruby, SH);
    • experience with internet protocols and programming for background processes;
    • familiarity with public genomic or genetic resources and how to use them;
    • the ability to work with public domain software (typically C) for integration into solutions; and
    • the ability to reverse engineer.
