Field Associate

Location: Sycamore, Illinois, USA

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Field Associate is responsible for supporting all activities of the breeding research program. These include, but are not limited to, the processing, counting and assembly of seed for nursery, ICB's, and yield trials, scouting nurseries for insects and diseases, planting, detasseling, hand pollination in summer and winter nurseries, harvesting of nursery and yield trial plots. Use of transport vehicles to move research equipment and operate such equipment, including performance of periodic inspections and maintenance of field and lab equipment, is required. This position will also be responsible for the supervision of seasonal temporary help.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

  • • BS degree in agronomy or related field, OR associates degree with 3 years experience in seed research, OR high school diploma and 10 years experience in seed research. Farm experience will be considered
  • • Ability to communicate and interact with other research personnel, both at this and other research locations
  • • Computer literacy and proficiency in MS Office
  • • Experience maintaining and operating tractors, combines, planters, and other miscellaneous research equipment
  • • Experience in a supervisory role
  • • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and Department of Transportation (DOT) certifications upon or required within 6 months of hire date
  • • Restricted Use Pesticide Applicators license upon or required within 6 months of hire date
  • • Ability and willingness to work in adverse environmental conditions including heat, cold, wind, rain and sunshine
  • • Ability to travel 2 approximately weeks in January to winter nurseries in Hawaii

DESIRED SKILLS:

  • • Small Plot research experience
  • • Experience in seed corn research, especially supervision of seasonal and temporary personnel
  • • A farm background
