Research Associate

Location: Moorhead, Minnesota, USA

Pioneer Hi-Bred, a DuPont business, is currently seeking a Research Associate in Moorhead, MN for a comprehensive maize product development, characterization, and commercialization program.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Conduct experiments, to completion, according to specific procedures, exercising independent judgment and discretion as appropriate.
    This includes, but not limited to, the knowledge of general agronomic practices, herbicide application and evaluation procedures, crop scouting, implementation of new technologies, computer skills and experimental design and analysis.
  • Use Pioneer proprietary software for initiation, mapping, tracking and analysis of experiments and communicate data and information as appropriate to all managers of regulated experiments.
  • Supervision and accountability for assigned projects and coordination of experiments with other research centers across North America. Implement experiment protocols as designed by experiment managers, providing oversight of all cultural practices, spraying, irrigation treatments and other specific treatment and/or observational requirements in those protocols.
  • Maintains, organizes and summarizes results of experiments, noting problem areas while recommending actions to be taken within standard procedures. Recruits, organizes and supervises work of temporary employees.
  • Promotes safe, effective and accurate work environment.
  • Provides development, analysis and maintenance support to Research Equipment Support group.
  • Inspects and performs routine maintenance on sophisticated research equipment used to conduct experiments.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory of chemicals and/or supplies necessary for the completion of experiments at work location.
  • May identify suitable testing locations for regulated transgenic and non-regulated yield tests and observation experiments.
  • May act as contact with landowner/cooperators.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture or scientific related field and a minimum of 2 – 4 years experience in related field; or equivalent amounts of relevant education and experience.
  • Ability to conduct field activities such as tillage, weed control, fertility management, and field equipment readiness.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as math and computer skills.
  • Self-motivation and ability to initiate projects, improvements, decisions and problem solving.
  • Supervisory and leadership skills to effectively coordinate complex research center operations.
  • Operation and maintenance of sophisticated research equipment.
  • Strong computer skills (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Access and MS Outlook), along with mainframe and handheld PC experience.
  • Agronomic expertise to include herbicide knowledge and application, tillage practices, crop scouting and problem identification and solving.
  • Ability to obtain a Certified Pesticide Applicator License and Commercial Drivers License.
  • May be required to do physical lifting and work in varying ergonomic environments.
