JOB PURPOSE AND SUMMARY
This position will assume the responsibility for coordinating all processes and personnel involved with production, quality, and supply of parental seeds, including foundation seeds (FS) and stock seeds (SS). The main focus will be to secure genetic uniformity and purity of parental lines received from the breeders or/and available in inventory. Responsible for production and maintaining those lines in pure and uniform state through the life-time of the hybrids. Responsible for securing accurate parental descriptors from the breeders and maintaining the information database to facilitate production and quality control of stock seeds and commercial seeds.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinate production and maintenance of FS and SS of advance pre-commercial and commercial hybrids. Assumes close collaboration with the breeders and production personnel.
- Plan and supervise the production of Foundation Seeds sufficient for a minimum of 2 production cycles of SS. For Solanum crops, the FS production activities will be carried out in Hollister Station; cucurbit FS will be produced in Bakersfield Station.
- Directly participates in field visit to all FS and SS production sites at specified crop stages to assess phenotypic uniformity and genetic purity of Solanum and Cucurbit crops.
- Directly responsible for creating and maintaining parent line information and inventory of FS and SS. Works closely with the personnel responsible for management of the parent line databases, physical inventory, and production forecasting of commercial seed.
- Assumes responsibility for all aspects of Quality related to SS and FS. The focus will be on genetic purity but also includes germination, and seed health.
- Liaises with IT and Production personnel to provide and secure timely input of parental and hybrid descriptors and other information as needed by production and QA.
- Works closely with Production and Product Management on 3-5 years SS requirements for commercial seed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Education Level and Focus:
B.S. or A.S. degree in Agriculture/Plant Science or related field. Breeding or genetics experience preferred.
Years and Type of Related Experience Required:
Minimum of two (2) years of field experience.
Skills and Abilities:
- Developing constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, and maintaining them at all times.
- Knowledge of: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint.
- Requires great attention to detail.
- Ability to organize, set priorities, schedule and review work.
- Deal calmly and effectively in a seasonally demanding work environment.
- Must be able to work in the office and fields/greenhouses and cages under various ambient conditions, particularly reduced air-quality and in periods of high temperatures possible exceeding 100 degrees F.
- Must be physically fit to walk, bend, kneel, squat, bend your neck, and lift up to 50 lbs.
