DESCRIPTION:
Reporting to the Kekaha Applied Genetics Manager, the Senior Applied Genetics Associate will supervise inbred nursery and hybrid seed production operations for regulated and non-regulated Corn, Sunflower, Soybean, and Canola projects at the Kekaha Research Station. The incumbent is expected to design, supervise, and execute sowing, transplanting, tissue sampling, pollination (including hybrid crosses), harvest, threshing, drying, conditioning, and shipment processes. The incumbent will work closely to forecast and coordinate efforts to meet requirements of regional and global development managers, quality control and molecular lab managers, as well as regulatory compliance and environmental health and safety managers. The incumbent is expected to draw on experience and education to help innovate, develop, and implement improvements to hybrid and inbred Corn, Sunflower, Soybean, and Canola seed production methods. Periodic seasonal travel (10%) to support Corn, Sunflower, Soybean, and Canola seed production is expected. Maintaining compliance with corporate and government (USDA) policies is a priority objective. The incumbent will also be expected to assume site responsibilities supporting the local EH&S program, to promote and create a culture of superior worker and environmental safety.
QUALIFICATIONS :
BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent
REQUIRED:
- M.S. Degree in Agronomy, Plant Breeding, Crop Science, Genetics, Crop Protection or related field, with at least 4 years of applicable experience -OR- B.S. Degree with at least 7 years of applicable experience
- At least 3 years of demonstrable prior experience executing both inbred and hybrid seed production, preferably in Corn, Sunflower, Soybean, and Canola
- Demonstrated expertise with computer applications
- Willingness and ability to work in adverse field conditions
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
DESIRED:
- Experience managing regulated inbred and hybrid Corn, Sunflower, Soybean, and Canola seed production
- Experience with use of molecular markers for selection and quality control
- Experience managing or supervising a team of temporary or full-time workers in a regulated seed handling environment
- Secondary language skills
