Research Assistant, Plant Pathology

Location: Immokalee, Florida, USA


HM.CLAUSE is a Business Unit of Limagrain, an international agricultural co-operative founded and managed by farmers. HM.CLAUSE specializes in the breeding, production, and sale of vegetable seeds. From the world market to the farmer's market, we collaborate with our customers to deliver successful solutions for the agricultural challenges of today and produce the highest quality vegetable seeds for the future. Our global team of experts and state-of-the-art research facilities enable us to work side-by-side with growers to provide the most regionally relevant and reliable vegetable seeds available.

POSITION SUMMARY

The successful candidate will hold the main responsibility to conduct applied plant pathology research to advance and support HM.CLAUSE and Limagrain vegetable seed projects. This will primarily be accomplished through the implementation of plant pathology trials in the greenhouse, laboratory, and field.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Actively participate in pathology projects in the laboratory, greenhouse and field (~90% of total activity)
  • Preparation of microbiological media and culture of plant pathogens
  • Responsible for the care of plants in the greenhouse
  • Evaluation plant pathology trials in the greenhouse and field
  • Oversee the activities of support staff related to routine application activities
  • Keep records of laboratory and greenhouse activities, and generate reports and summaries
  • Support station phytosanitary activities
  • Other duties as assigned

Job requirements

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or agricultural sciences

TECHNICAL SKILLS

  • Background in laboratory testing and general familiarity with laboratory equipment such as pipettes, balances, pH meters.
  • Comfortable working with laboratory chemicals and working within the metric system.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow technical written protocols.
  • Required basic understanding of microbiology.
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multitask consistently and accurately is required.
  • Knowledge of biological safety containment is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication is a necessity for this position.

COMPETENCIES

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work in laboratory, greenhouse and field environment.
  • Some local travel may be required to assist with field activities
  • Ability to execute assigned routine tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Spanish language a plus.
  • Dedication to working safely in accordance with company safety policies and practices
