Scientist, Trait Discovery
Location: Berkeley, California, USA 
Fortiphyte develops disease resistant crop varieties to improve the safety, productivity, and environmental sustainability of agriculture. We use a variety of methods including high-throughput sequencing, genetic screens, proteomics, and genome engineering to discover and deploy naturally occurring disease resistance traits.
We are looking for a scientist to join our trait discovery team to work on identifying new plant disease resistance genes. The work will include bioinformatic analysis, molecular biology and cloning, setting up screens for disease resistance phenotypes and gene function, transient expression assays, genetics, and a variety of related techniques as required to identify and characterize new genes from diverse plant species.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Help plan, conduct and oversee trait screening pipeline
- Design, conduct and oversee routine molecular biology work
- Conduct plant disease assays
- Help develop commercialization and intellectual property strategy
- Help coordinate with seed company collaborators
- Maintain a lab notebook
- Maintain a safe and clean lab environment
- May manage research assistant
Required: PhD in biology or a related field. Strong background in molecular biology, microbiology and related lab techniques. Good organization skills, labeling, and record keeping. Track record of success across different projects. Experience working collaboratively and managing other researchers. Self-motivated and excited to apply biotechnology to solve problems in agriculture.
Preferred: Experience working with plants. Background knowledge of plant immunity. Experience managing a research assistant.
