Fortiphyte develops disease resistant crop varieties to improve the safety, productivity, and environmental sustainability of agriculture. We use a variety of methods including high-throughput sequencing, genetic screens, proteomics, and genome engineering to discover and deploy naturally occurring disease resistance traits.
We are looking for a scientist to lead our trait deployment team to engineer disease resistance traits into tomato. This will include making transformation constructs, testing the efficacy of different disease resistance traits, screening transformed lines by genotyping and phenotyping, and helping to coordinate with seed company collaborators. Experience with plant pathogen assays and knowledge of the tomato industry is helpful but not required.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Manage at least one research technician
- Plan, perform and oversee routine molecular biology work including cloning and genotyping
- Plan, perform and oversee plant disease assays
- Maintain a lab notebook
- Help develop commercialization strategy and coordinate with seed company collaborators
- Maintain a safe and clean lab environment
Required: PhD in biology or a related field. Strong background in molecular biology, microbiology and related lab techniques. Exceptional organization skills, labeling, and record keeping. Track record of success across different projects. Experience working collaboratively and managing other researchers. Self-motivated and excited to apply biotechnology to solve problems in agriculture.
Preferred: At least two years of research experience after obtaining a PhD. Background or knowledge of plant pathology, including bacterial disease assays. Experience analyzing high-throughput sequencing data. Experience working with tomatoes and knowledge about the tomato industry.
