Stock Seed Manager

Location: Dixon, California, USA

Magnum Seeds is located in Dixon, California.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible to Analyze, Plan, and Produce, to deliver the quantity and quality of parent Stockseed of Cucumber, Eggplant, Melon, Hot and Sweet Pepper, Squash, Tomato, and Watermelon required to supply the parent seed for hybrid seed production according to sales contracts with Magnum external and internal customers. Additional responsibility for organizing, planting, reading Purity Grow Out (PGO) trials, and posting results.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Insure Stockseed (SS) inventories are correct as indicated in accounting system.
  • Insure all SS lots have quality tests complete.
  • Calculate future kilos requirements of each parent in the (SS) inventory based on sales forecasts.
  • Calculate when the next increase needed for each parent and the quantity needed.
  • Plan the Parent SS increases for the next production season.
  • Inform the breeder the amounts of Foundation Stockseed(FS) that will be needed according to the SS increase plan.
  • Coordinate the distribution of Parent SS and FS seed to the producer. Lot selection and quantities.
  • Send producers descriptions of each parent, and any special conditions helpful to the production of the crop.
  • Make timely visits to SS producers to confirm the FS used will produce the correct variety, and uniform SS.
  • Collect rouging information from producers, as the final quality analysis of SS lots. Inform FS of problem lots.
  • Supervise the Planting, Growing, Rouging and Harvest of all SS produced in California.
  • Update Base Rate file for Commercial and SS production.
  • Update Parent description file. Include notes and photos which will help producers.
  • Coordinate the quality testing of incoming Commercial and Stockseed production.
  • Organize, plant, and read all PGO trials planted in California.
  • Read and distribute purity results.
     

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Read, write and verbally communicate in English. Conversational Spanish is helpful.
  • Competent in the use of Outlook and Internet.
  • Ability to manage data and photos using Microsoft Word, and Excel.
  • Physically able to travel internationally, on long flights, and work for long periods in the field and greenhouse.
  • Ability to transfer information accurately.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Four year college degree in an agriculture related field.
  • Two or more years of seed production experience.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to understand and carry out specific procedures related to the identification and handling of seed to prevent errors and failures.
  • Ability to plan, organize and evaluate many types and sizes of vegetable seed productions.
  • Skills to communicate production plans and procedures to producers, and others responsible for doing work in the crop.
  • Skills to be able to collect and report, with detail, data which describes the status of crops being produced.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid California Driver’s license
  • Passport-Travel Internationally
  • Pass drug-screening test
  • Pass Pre-employment physical
