Plant Breeder, Onion

Location: California/Arizona area, USA


Job Summary

This role is accountable for developing and managing the implementation of approved breeding programs and projects designed to improve the quality, yield and agronomic performance of onion in order to create new improved plant varieties. 

As a team member, the breeder is expected to support the Crop Breeding Manager (CBM) of onion in executing the overall strategic direction of onion and work collaboratively with other breeders and other functions for the achievement of East-West Seed (EWS) Group’s business objectives guided by the mission and vision, core values, EWS strategy, and established systems, policies and processes of the company.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Plans, implements and manages breeding trials in various locations using appropriate breeding approaches and technologies to ensure speedy results and optimum use of resources in various locations.
  • Ensures accurate and timely recording of relevant data throughout the trial period using the prescribed information and database system of the company.
  • Supervises, directly or indirectly, all aspects of breeding trials, including sowing and planting, pollination, plant selection, data collection, seed harvesting, etc.
  • Consolidates and analyzes breeding and trial data.
  • Exchanges valuable breeding material among EWS breeders.
  • Submits trial and progress reports to onion CBM and/or country R&D managers for review and discussion, as required.
  • Trains and supports technical and field staff to ensure the trials are conducted as per the breeding program design.
  • Plans, coordinates, assists with and follows up on activities/trials done by support functions such as plant pathology/entomology and biotechnology (e.g. markers, cell biology, etc.).
  • Oversees continuous germplasm collection and selection activities to ensure a rich and steady supply of diverse materials for breeding pipeline development.
  • Ensures uniform parental seeds are made available for seed multiplication.
  • Plans budget for approved breeding programs and ensures efficient utilization of the company's resources.
  • Interacts closely with PDS and commercial teams to better understand market requirements and needs of farmers, traders, retailers and consumers.
  • Provides regular updates to the key stakeholders of the breeding program to support assessment of candidate varieties for advancement to commercialization.
  • Participates and contributes to the crop management planning discussions to understand and align with commercial directions and decisions.
  • Keeps up to date with scientific developments and translates ideas from scientific literature into new approaches to breeding practices, and techniques to improve project implementation or to address breeding problems.
  • Monitors the activities of competitors and uses these information to guide new product development.
  • Develops and builds successors for the plant breeder position. 

Minimum Requirements (Education, Experience , Skills)

  • Established technical knowledge and expertise in plant breeding gained from a formal academic background, i.e., MSc in plant breeding; PhD preferred
  • Extensive plant breeding experience in a similar industry/for a similar crop (minimum of 5 years) with evidence of demonstrated success (breeding programs that yielded favorable commercial results)
