YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary responsibilities of this role, Vegetable R&D Breeding Intern, are to:
- Work on GWAS study on cauliflower vernalization (temperature sensitivity associated curd initiation), and bioinformatics enabled gene mining;
- Use genomics data generated from the canola Infinium chip to perform genome wide association mapping looking for genomic regions with significant effects on temperature sensitivity associated curd initiation within internal cauliflower germplasm;
- Explore, further, candidate genes/markers using bioinformatics and existing biological knowledge that can help generate climate-proof cauliflower varieties, if identified significant genomic regions;
- Cross-validate candidate vernalization genes/markers in cauliflower with canola flowering markers to explore possibilities of genetic material exchange between the two species in the future;
- Work on PCA of broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage heterotic groupings;
- Analyze genomic fingerprint data returned from current elite broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and lettuce lines to perform including not limited, Principle component and clustering analysis on the three crops, Cross-validation between genotype and phenotype based heterotic grouping, Discriminate analysis to assign elite lines into known heterotic groups;
- Work closely with breeders for respective crops with interpretation and implementation of the discoveries from this project;
- Be responsible for working with internal data systems, connecting with key stakeholder, and delivering high quality result;
- Be responsible for day-to-day prioritization of the project needs among the overall needs and plan accordingly.

Required Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled is a MS or phD in Genetics, Genomic, Informatic, Statistics, Data Science, or related STEM field;
- Demonstrated computational skills and experience with R, R Shiny, Python, Perl or other programming languages;
- Ability to articulate actionable needs of the project and communicate priorities;
- Detail and results orientated and ability to work independently;
- Organizational, interpersonal and written communication skills;
- Must be available to work 40 hours a week from June 14th, 2021 through September 3rd, 2021.
