YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The primary responsibilities of this role, Vegetable Research and Development Breeding Intern, are to: 

  • Work closely with her/his mentor to identify and execute a proof of concept for novel phenotypic traits that can be collected in a high-throughput method and replicate key phenotypes for vegetable large seed;
  • Work closely with Breeders to articulate the traits and potential phenotypes, coordinate with Operations to collect data and connect with internal Engineers to arrange for efficient data collection and processing;
  • Develop a general understanding of the workflow in a breeding program and how the application of the results of the study can be put into action in the pipeline in the future;
  • Be responsible for working with internal data systems and develop a plan to collect and process data within these parameters;
  • Be responsible for day to day prioritization of the project needs among the overall needs and plan accordingly;
  • Be willing to travel within driving distance and able to operate vehicles as typical operated by the business;
  • Work closely with his/her mentor to deliver results as the end of the internship on the results and next steps.

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a Master of Science in Breeding, Agronomy, Horticulture, Engineering, Data Science or related STEM field;
  • Qualify for field work conditions (ability to lift up to 60 lbs.) and qualify to operate vehicles typically operated by the business;
  • Strong experience with excel and willing to collect data via high throughput methods;
  • Ability to articulate actionable needs of the project and communicate priorities;
  • Detail and results orientated and ability to work independently;
  • Problem solving ability and willing to work in field conditions;
  • Organizational, interpersonal; and written communication skills;
  • Must be available to work 40 hours from June 14th, 2021 through September 3rd, 2021.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in R, Python or other;
  • Experience working with a breeding program a general understanding of quantitative genetics;
  • Experience in engineering to deliver and improved methods to collect data outdoors.
