ASSISTANT ONION BREEDER

Crookham Company is a family owned breeding and seed production company located in Caldwell, Idaho that has been in business since 1911. Crookham Company has one of the world’s largest seed banks of popcorn, sweet corn and onions and we are proud to be a world leader in hybrid sweet corn, popcorn, and onion varieties. Our main research station is in Wilder, Idaho and we carry out additional research in Oregon, Washington, California, New Mexico, Wisconsin, and New York, among other locations. Crookham is seeking a qualified candidate for Assistant Onion Breeder to join our team in Caldwell, Idaho.

The Assistant Breeder will play an important role in assisting our onion breeders with day-to-day activities, as well as interacting with our production, harvest, and seed conditioning teams. The position will involve setup and coordination of trials, pollinating crew supervision, trial evaluation, fresh product harvest, seed harvest, data collection, data analysis and seed inventory. Crookham Company is looking for a candidate that is passionate about plants and variety improvement with the desire to work in a diverse research environment that will include developing new varieties, researching new cultural practices, postharvest studies and new harvest techniques, to name a few.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

  • Coordination of breeding trials including trial setup, planting, evaluation, and seed harvest ensuring appropriate data collection and entry.
  • Liaison with sales for intermediate hybrid trialing.
  • Responsible for providing project status updates, reviews and evaluation and full reports for all research activities to appropriate individuals
  • Willing to travel to other locations, out of state and internationally, to assist in onion operations, and become familiar with the Crookham onion breeding program and company objectives.
  • Assist in planning, implementation, evaluation, and summarization of production research projects.
  • Ability to work individually and as a member of a team sharing responsibilities, ideas, inputs striving to achieve a common goal.
  • Ability to work with growers, customers, nursery providers and various individuals outside of the company.
  • Ability to work long hours and in a variety of different environmental conditions, including very high and very low temperatures.
  • Capable of differentiating information or materials that are confidential and sharing information appropriately within and outside the Crookham organization.
  • Management of casual labor.
  • Manage seed inventory.
  • Manage and maintain trials and nurseries in breeding software.
  • Willing to perform other duties as assigned.
     
  • Experience/knowledge in Microsoft Office.
  • Fluent in English, Spanish would be beneficial.
     
  • Bachelor’s Degree minimum plus five years’ experience with breeding, trialing or relevant responsibilities required. Area(s) of study: plant breeding, biology, horticulture, agronomy, or related field.
