Cabbage and Broccoli Breeder Assistant

Location: Sutterton, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom

Cabbage and Broccoli Breeder Assistant (M/F)

Full-time permanent position

Context

Sakata is a Japanese seed company with a global presence in the vegetable seed business, with research and development sites located around the world. At Sakata UK Limited breeding is focused on field brassicas as well as spinach. As part of our continued expansion in these crops we seek a person to assist with these breeding programs.

Missions

The role of the breeder assistant will be to take responsibility for the day-to-day activities of the cabbage trial officer and broccoli breeding support undertaken mainly at Sakata UK. The key responsibilities include:

  1. The establishment and maintenance of cabbage and broccoli trials on and off site
  2. Evaluation and introduction of new cabbage crosses in EMEA with close contact to breeder
  3. Support broccoli breeding activity
  4. Responsible for making broccoli seed by manipulation, pollination and seed cleaning
  5. Supervise students and labour agency workers
  6. General support of all research activity in Sakata UK

While the breeder assistant will be based at the UK office (Sutterton, Lincolnshire), it will be necessary periodically to work away from the main site and this may require overnight stays. Travel in EMEA territories will also be necessary.
The breeding assistant will need to collaborate with pathology, biotechnology, marketing, sales, seed production and QA abroad.

Profile

  • We are seeking candidates educated to a degree level in applicable science subjects and / or with 1-3 years’ relevant experience.
  • The ideal candidate will be motivated, enthusiastic, with good communication, interpersonal and IT skills and willing to work across a broad range of diverse tasks and environments.
  • The successful candidate must demonstrate a willingness to learn and appreciate the need for accuracy in both practical and analytical tasks.
  • Additionally, dexterity and patience to perform delicate tasks is important.
  • This role requires the candidate to be able to work independently as well as part of a team.
