Foundation Seed Assistant

Location: Bakersfield, California, USA

JOB PURPOSE AND SUMMARY

Foundation Seed Assistant assists foundation seed production manager in performing a variety of routine or repetitive technical duties in the office, greenhouses, and field.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists foundation seed manager in conducting day to day activities for foundation/stock seed production, including, but not limited to, planning, organizing and sowing seeds, transplanting, taking notes and pictures, harvesting, cleaning, packing and shipping seeds.
  • Assists foundation seed production manager in conducting cucurbit descriptor project, including, but not limited to, planning, organizing and sowing seeds, making observations, and taking notes and pictures.
  • Helps foundation seed production manager to conduct miscellaneous tasks on PC. These include, but not limited to, making labels and creating lists for trials, entering data from field observations, and formatting/editing for final printout.
  • Supports various tasks for the station as and when required by the station manager in consultation with foundation seed production manager.

Education Level and Focus:

Associate’s degree in Agriculture/Plant Science or field experience

Years and Type of Related Experience Required:

1 year of on-the-job training

Skills and Abilities:

Interpersonal and Communication:

Developing constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, and maintaining them at all times. The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking clearly so others can understand you. The ability to identify and understand the speech of another person and to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences. The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.

Technical and Analytical:

Use common office equipment (computer, printer, fax machine, copier, and phone). Knowledge of: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. Analytical mind to recognize the problems and find solutions and to apply the fundamental skills and working knowledge of concepts, practices and procedures necessary for fulfilling responsibilities. Requires great attention to detail.

Administrative and Operations:

May organize, set priorities, schedule and review work. Be able to manage time to accomplish daily/short term goals set by foundation seed production manager/station manager.

Physical Demands:

Must be able to work in the office and fields, cages and greenhouses under extreme weather conditions, be physically fit to walk, reach overhead, bend, kneel, squat, bend your neck and lift up to 20 lbs.

Work Environment:

Office, open field, cages and greenhouse work with temperatures close to 100 degrees, walk on uneven surface and often be exposed to chemicals.
