Owensboro, Kentucky
February 10, 1999Owensboro Grain, Inc. and Biosource Technologies, Inc. have
announced an agreement to develop technology for the recovery and purification of
biopharmaceuticals and other biomolecules from genetically modified seed crops such as soy,
corn, and canola.
The announcement was made by Glenn Wright, president/CEO, John Wright, vice president,
Operations from Owensboro Grain Company, Owensboro, Kentucky and Dr. Barry Holtz, Vice
Ppresident, Bioprocess Development for Biosource Technologies, Inc.
Owensboro Grain Company is an industry leader in the extraction and refining of soybean
oil and soy protein products. The company has been in business since 1906, processing
soybeans for more than 50 years.
Biosource Technologies, Inc. is a leader in the production of biopharmaceuticals in
plants.
Biosource, established in 1987, has led the development of processes for recovery of
biopharmaceuticals from tobacco plants that are modified using our proprietary viral
vector system, GENEWARE®. Biosource has recently completed its new pharmaceutical
extraction
facility in Owensboro.
"The combination of two leading bioprocessing companies to combine their upstream and
downstream expertise in recovering biopharmaceutical targets will rapidly expand our
target base and biomass base to compliment our current production of biopharmaceuticals in
tobacco,'' said Barry Holtz of Biosource.
"Owensboro Grain Company, known throughout the soybean processing industry as
processors of quality, high-value products welcomes the opportunity to team with
Biosource,'' said John Wright.
The technical teams from each company are currently starting a multi-year research,
development, and scale-up effort to develop new cost-effective processes for the recovery
of
complex biomolecules from seed crops such as soy, corn, and canola.
Biosource Technologies, Inc. is a fully integrated research through manufacturing
enterprise that provides novel technologies to life science discovery and product
development programs. In September Biosource announced a three-year
collaboration with The Dow Chemical Company and Dow AgroSciences to create one of the
world's largest plant functional genomics efforts.
Biosource has just announced the expansion of it proprietary
technology through the acquisition of Large Scale Biology Corporation, Rockville, Md.
