Department of Agriculture, Western Australia releases potential dwarf milling oat variety
Western Australia
October 12, 2005

A potential dwarf milling oat variety was released at this year's Dowerin field day.

The new variety, Kojonup, named after the Western Australian river, has been released as a provisional milling oat variety based on its performance in laboratory milling tests.

The milling quality is significantly better than current dwarf milling varieties and it has improved yield compared with tall milling varieties.

GRDC supports the Western Australian Department of Agriculture's breeding program, which is responsible for this variety.

The quality characteristics of this new variety are that it has high groat percentage, a large seed size, low screenings, good hectolitre weight and good grain.

Kojonup is resistant to the predominant strains of leaf rust in Western Australia, but is susceptible to stem rust.
